CAMPUS AND LOCATION
Founded in 1935, Hofstra University is a private university located on 244 acres and just 25 miles east of New York City, where students can take advantage of the academic, cultural, and career opportunities. The University prides itself on its small class sizes and emphasizes both the creation and dissemination of knowledge. State-of-the-art campus facilities and strong community connections help students develop into confident and competent graduates.
FACILITIES
Hofstra University is home to several unique academic centers and institutes that push for advancements in research within their fields. For instance, the science research complex includes electron microscope facilities, newly renovated biology research laboratories, and a state-licensed animal care facility. The Center for Condensed Matter Research supports ongoing work at Hofstra on practical applications of physics, such as photocells, more powerful computers, physics of the heart, and various types of networks, including ecosystems. The Maurice A. Deane School of Law houses several research centers, including the Center for Legal Advocacy; Institute for Health Law and Policy; and Center for Children, Families, and the Law.
The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science recently completed a $12 million renovation of all its academic facilities. Laboratories and classrooms received new technologies, machinery, and equipment, all of which are accessible to trained engineering and computer science students. As entrepreneurship is an integral focus of the program, the 3-D printer laboratory allows students to create prototypes and experiment with projects at early stages in their careers. Hofstra students also have access to the newly renovated $1 million Big Data Lab. The DeMatteis School is proud to offer a co-operative educational experience, which allows qualified students the opportunity to gain real-world experience while completing their degree.
The Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency is one of the few institutions in the country with a unique focus on research and analysis related to the American presidency. The Kalikow Center holds annual conferences and symposia that attract leading journalists, scholars, and policymakers from around the world. These symposia are viewed as a first draft of history for the administrations they examine.
