Regent University - School of Law

Virginia's Regent University Law School is a flexible, Christ-centered institution that has been offering exceptional academics based on a spiritual and moral perspective since 1986. The curriculum is called PractiSkills and combines faculty and attorney mentorships with courses that provide students professional, real-world applications for the material. For example, the Civil Procedure course includes training in drafting pleadings and engaging in discovery. Additionally, field placements are available for credit year-round, and some third-year students may even be placed in an Apprenticeship Program, which allows them to work under a university-selected Christian attorney. Regent's practice-ready approach has earned it a good reputation with the bar, and more than 20 percent of the most recent graduating class secured federal and state judicial clerkships. Overall, the school has a commitment to “academic excellence, integrity, and formation of the whole person.” There's also a belief in progression in regard to a student's position in their class, so “any student not afforded the honors designation at the beginning of the 1L year may achieve this status by working hard to achieve a certain grade point average by the end of the academic year,” thus opening up new opportunities and smaller class sizes that are accessible to honors students.

The faculty at Regent Law “have extensive history as practicing attorneys before becoming professors” and so they “offer a wonderful combination of understanding legal theory while peppering in practical wisdom on how it applies in practice.” Most professors here “are extremely knowledgeable of their content area and make it their mission to instill that knowledge in their students.” Their desire to share makes it “very easy to communicate with professors and easy to make appointments to meet with them,” and means that they “do their best to ensure every student gets the attention and help they are seeking.” The administration similarly has “an open-door policy and are willing to get to know students on a personal level.” They “make sure [students] are happy and healthy during law school.” As for the law library, it's “very close to the … school and has all the research resources a law student might need.” The classrooms themselves “have plenty of space and the courses are never too full.” Overall, “the facilities are well taken care of and perfectly adequate for any research or school-related need,” which helps the school do “a tremendous job in helping students excel and learn what is needed to become truly ethical and professional lawyers.”

Regent is “quiet and professional, which allows for a focused and academic environment.” It is guided by Christian ideals, but “freely allows the expression of all ideas and does not hold one's contrarian viewpoints against [them].” That leads to “a vibrant, uplifting, and encouraging community.” While students here are “a competitive bunch, [they] don't see the value in cutting each other down to get ahead.” The overall environment “is incredibly pleasant,” and students “play by the rules and compete in a fair manner.” As one student shares, “Number one hundred in the class can ask number one for help and number one would not think twice about [offering] it.” This amiable bunch spends time together both in and out of the classroom, often choosing “to celebrate … birthdays, have dinner parties, go on shopping trips, take trips to the beach, [and] have study sessions at each other's apartments.” As far as structured activities go, “there are many student-led clubs and activities,” and “the school frequently hosts lawyers, authors, and judges.”
