The Kogod School of Business was established in Washington, DC more than sixty years ago. At Kogod, we are building a more sustainable world through business through globally-minded programs that allow students to create positive and lasting changes around the world.
Kogod—and American University, at large—is a community that wants to make a positive impact. AU was the first US university to reach carbon neutrality, doing so ahead of our target year!
Kogod fosters a diverse and inclusive environment—an endeavor we believe deepens our understanding of a complex, global business world. We ground our programs in experiential learning, and students work alongside professors on hands-on projects. Our faculty and staff help build the path from passion to success, offering students the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to turn aspirations into outcomes. Graduates are leaders on Wall Street and in the corporate world as well as in non-profits, government agencies, and social-service organizations.
Kogod is the oldest accredited business school in Washington, DC. The school is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), which represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide.

Academic Programs
Kogod's on-campus, full-time MBA program is designed as a career catalyst for ambitious professionals. The 49-credit program can be completed in 21 months; students complete their core courses in the first year, leaving the second open to electives. Several of our programs—including the full-time MBA—are now offered with a STEM designation designed to develop students' management and technical skills, producing a new class of executives with a strong understanding of business and technology.
A global consulting project is the highlight of the program. Students work with an international client to solve a problem integral to the company's operation. The project culminates in a site visit where students present their findings and recommendations in the client's home country. Past MBA cohorts have traveled to China, Colombia, India, Israel, Poland, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates.
Kogod also offers specialized sustainability-minded master's programs in accounting, analytics, finance, marketing, sustainability management, and taxation that provide advanced training from real-world professionals and thought leaders. Kogod leverages its connections within each industry to help students broaden their knowledge about career options, current industry trends, and the general industry landscape. Special Academic Programs
The American University Center for Innovation (AUCI) provides students with opportunities to build entrepreneurial mindsets and skills through hands-on learning experiences. AUCI hosts a series of pitch challenges and competitions, helps develop entrepreneurship coursework, and supports students and alumni in creating and sustaining their own startups.
The Center for Professionalism and Communications coaches students in career readiness skills ranging from writing and speaking to critical thinking, leadership, and technological know-how. Through the center's peer coaching model, students who excel in these skills tutor their classmates directly, creating a collaborative environment where students at all levels can continue to hone these vital skills.
Kogod in Practice encompasses learning opportunities such as pro bono consulting projects and the Kogod Cooperative Education Program (or Kogod Co-Op). Students participating in pro bono consulting work directly with small or mid-sized companies for three months and learn how to meet a business's unique needs and provide relevant results. Kogod Co-Op links students to a 6-12 month paid internship with a university-approved employer and gives them the chance to apply their classroom knowledge to the business world.
Faculty

Our faculty work alongside students to create groundbreaking research that changes the way governments and businesses operate.

Students Say
“A very organized, easy-to-interpret class framework” sets the tone for these seamless programs, where a focus on presentation skills and case analysis runs throughout. Fulltime students can apply their knowledge to real-world client projects, choosing between a consulting focus, an elective schedule forged from Kogod’s variety of offerings, or a managerial emphasis. All full-time students must also complete a global consulting project with an international client in their second year (professional students do a study abroad trip).
Professors at Kogod are “genuinely interested in seeing us succeed and extend themselves as much as possible.” Their “willingness to help you with anything, whether its academics, external projects, or career advice” is a notable benefit of the small class sizes, and it means that “each student can ensure that they can get attention on a particular topic that they may be struggling with.” “I have had some great professors who have taken out the time to really go deep into the material being taught to make sure that the class is understanding and grasping the subject,” says a student. The administration is similarly “mindful of needs of working professional students and move quickly to increase the ease of our user experience” and is “active in addressing issues that we bring to them to ensure that we are getting the best possible education.”
